Sanguem: PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar on Wednesday, October 23, gave a fresh lease of life to the Powerloom centre at Wadem Curdi in Sanguem, which was closed few years back due to the alleged negligent attitude of the Department of Handicraft, Textiles and Coir.
The powerloom centre at Curdi Wadem was inaugurated some 22 years back to provide employment opportunities to the youth from the rehabilitated colonies at Curdi Wadem.
However after a few years of its existence, the centre was closed as there was no takers for the finished products and also allegedly due to lethargic attitude of the Department officials who failed to give desired boost to the village unemployed youth to work at the Centre.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Pauskar assured all support and cooperation for the centre to function smoothly.
“The centre will never be closed now”, informed Pauskar while urging the local youth to join the powerloom centre in the village.
Pauskar also urged the local youth to devote full time for the powerloom activities and work on the lines of home industries as are found in the States of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Pauskar also asked the unemployed women in the village to form a group of minimum 20 people and commence the production of coir based items. “The government gives substantial amount of subsidy for industries,”Pauskar added.
Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar who was instrumental in getting the centre reopened in the village after raising the issue in the assembly appealed to the youth to engage themselves at the powerloom centre and in the long run open their own ventures.
Zilla Parishad member Navnath Naik and Director Goa Handloom Centre Arvind Bugde also spoke on the occasion.
