PORVORIM/VASCO: Property worth Rs 3 lakh was gutted in two separate fire incidents that occurred in Mapusa market and Baina in Vasco, on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
In the Mapusa incident, an air-conditioner of Mapusa Merchants Cooperative Society and the material made out of bamboo all worth Rs 2.50 lakh was gutted in fire at Mapusa Market sub-yard on Saturday night. Mapusa Fire station officials said that they received a call at 21.45 am on Saturday stating that fire has broken out in a godown at Mapusa Market sub-yard. Following this, senior fire station officer Bosco Ferrao along with his staff and fire tenders rushed to the site to put out the fire. It took them nearly two hours to extinguish the fire with the help of four fire tenders, two of which was requisitioned from Pilerne and Panjim.
While in Baina, fire broke out in a rented hutment destroying household goods worth Rs 50000. Luckily, the fire was doused before the same could spread to other hutments in the neighbourhood. A short-circuit is suspected to have ignited the fire. “We saw smoke coming out from the hutment occupied by one Gangava Dodmani on rent. As she had already left for work in the morning, we first raised alarm, so that the fire can be doused before the same spreads to other adjoining hutments. Finally, we all managed to bring the fire under control,” said local.
