PANJIM: Goa Police has suspended a lady police sub-inspector and a police constable for allegedly attempting to bribe Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Vimal Gupta to close a departmental enquiry (DE) against her. The IGP issued the order suspending PSI Devyani Ambekar Naik and PC Chetan Naik on Saturday after they were prima facie found to have committed the offence.
Devyani, who was earlier attached with the Police Control Room (PCR) at Calangute police station, was suspended in December 2013 for allegedly demanding a bribe to settle a NDPS case against some tourists at Calangute.
As per the inquiry details, she was in constant touch with the persons demanding a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to let them off in the case. The inquiry had revealed that she was also in touch with some agents involved in the matter and that she had given her bank account number where the amount was supposed to be deposited in her favour.
The earlier suspension order was issued by the then DIGP Dr O P Mishra, which was followed by a departmental enquiry. She was re-instated but the inquiry continued.
The present DIG, who is entrusted with conducting the enquiries, was approached by the PSI and the PC to settle the matter. It was thereafter that an inquiry was ordered after which Ketan was transferred to GRP. It is learnt that Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) is likely to be roped-in to investigate the corruption charges.
