VASCO: In a bid to boost water supply in the port town, the PWD (water department) will install booster pumps at places at a higher altitude to pump water to fill the overhead water tanks in Vasco and Mormugao.
“Due to low pressure, the overhead water tanks do not get completely filled, due to which residents of New Vaddem, Vasco and Mormugao have had to face some water shortages,” Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida told Herald.
“The PWD (water department) is all set to install booster pumps to pump water at places on a higher altitude to fill the overhead tanks in Vasco and Mormugao,” informed Almeida.
“Due to low pressure, the newly constructed ground reservoir at INS Gomantak gets filled only 60% of the level. As the reservoir is situated on the hillock, it requires more pressure to pump water to fill the water tank to its capacity,” said Almeida.
Almeida further informed that he and Power Minister Milind Naik have identified certain areas in Vasco and Mormugao to install the booster pumps.
“In Vasco, the booster pumps will be installed at New Vaddem, new ground reservoir at INS Gomantak and Mangor. Once booster pumps are installed, the overhead water tanks will be filled to their capacity and the residents will not face much water problems,” he added.
When reminded about the complaints from residents of Vasco and Mangor regarding water shortage, Almeida said: “Since the last two years, people have not faced a major water problem as Vasco gets the required quantity of water supply.”
“The water pipeline is very old and gets blocked due to the rust and as a result, residents do not get proper water supply. “In some areas, PWD assistant engineer Vishwambar Bhende along with his staff personally visited the affected areas and changed the old rusted pipeline and the residents started getting better water supply,” he said.
