VASCO: Raising serious concerns over the lack of proper illumination near the Cortalim junction, the Cortalim Panchayat on Monday demanded that the state administration should immediately intervene into the matter and should direct the concerned authorities to restore the illumination along the road from Zuari Bridge to the junction.
Speaking to Herald, the Cortalim Deputy Sarpanch Raymond de Sa said that in absence of proper illumination on road stretch commuters have been facing high risk of accidents.
“Since last few months the work on proposed widening of NH17 road which including new Zuari Bridge and flyover towards Cortalim side has been going on in full swing. However, there is no illumination at certain important stretches on this road from Zuari Bridge to Thana. Similarly, at various points, the project contractor has put up barricades for traffic diversion but in absence of illumination the area is plunged into darkness at night and risk of accidents taking place on this stretch of road has become high. We therefore demand that the concerned authorities should take a note of the same and should immediately direct the concerned officials to restore illumination in the area on priority,” De Sa demanded.
Cortalim Sarpanch Sania Barreto said, “Despite repeated requests from locals and the panchayat, the concerned authorities failed to keep the road stretch from Zuari Bridge to Cortalim junction properly illuminated, though there are street lights on the electricity poles. Now, through media we want to request for early solution to the issue as commuting from Zuari Bridge to Cortalim junction has become risky for commuters with severe accidents could happen anytime during night as there is no one to regulate traffic in the area”.
