Quepem Police detain two overloaded mining trucks

Quepem Police on Wednesday detained two overloaded mining trucks, even as residents from the taluka filed three police complaints against vehicles for causing nuisance.
Speaking to Herald, Quepem Deputy Collector Agnelo Fernandes said while he was on a inspection of mining trucks at Cacumordi, he noticed a truck driver from Jharkhand driving the truck (GA-09-U-1839) without valid driving licence.
“Besides, the truck was also overloaded. Similarly, a truck (GA-09-U-1168) was loaded double its capacity. I ordered detention of both the trucks,” stated the deputy collector.
“This shows that verification of driving licence of the drivers from outside the State is not done by the police,” said Fernandes.
Meanwhile, residents of Quepem and Curchorem are gearing up to fight against mining trucks. On Wednesday, three separate complaints were filed with Quepem and Curchorem police stations against mining trucks.
In a complaint filed with Curchorem police, Adv Sheetal Kakodkar claimed that mining trucks starts its operations at 6 am, which is in violation of court order.
In a complaint filed with Quepem police, one Cheryl de Souza of Maina-Quepem alleged that mining trucks are being parked alongside the road from Ambaulim to Kirlagali-Cavrem, which poses danger to the motorists. “This has been going on despite deputing police officials,” she added.
In yet another complaint filed with Quepem police, the Quepem Taluka Mining Affected Peoples Front has stated that Collectors’ order dated April 10, prohibiting entry for mining trucks on the road from 6 am to 6 pm is being violated.
“The ore-loaded trucks reaches Ambaulim at 5.50 am and crosses Quepem town at about 5.55 am, which means that trucks are loaded at the loading point between 5 and 5.30 am, while empty trucks starts plying along the road as early as 4 am,” she claimed.
The Front further stated during late evening hours, some trucks are being parked from Quepem Bazaar to Cindio Paradise, thereby causing hindrance to the public.
