Quepem society waives off interest on mining loans

MARGAO: The Quepem Urban Co-operative Credit Society has waived off interest to the tune of Rs 12 lakh on loans sanctioned to mining-dependent people, even as the Society has decided to seek multi-state status by establishing branches in neighbouring Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Addressing the media ahead of the occasion of the Society’s completion of 20 years on September 5, Chairman Prakash Velip said it will soon achieve multi-state status by setting up branches in other states. 
“The Society has taken the decision to seek multi-state status. We have even identified the places in Maharashtra and Karnataka to set up branches. We have observed that credit societies from outside the state are setting up shop in Goa. Hence, the Society has also decided to set up branches in other states,” he added.
On waiver of interest, Velip said that his society is based in the mining belt of Quepem and hence has waive off Rs 12 lakh interest after following the due procedure and taking into account the difficulties faced by the mining-dependent people.
Velip disclosed plans to set up an old-age home at Quepem with all facilities to meet the requirements of the aged. “The Society has been successfully running an alcoholic de-addiction centre in Quepem, which has given hope to many addicted to alcohol,” he said.
On the society front, Velip disclosed plans to increase the branches to 21 by opening a new branch at Mapusa. “Our share capital as one July 31, 2013 is 4.52 crore. While the deposits stand at Rs 156.44 crore, the total business turn over was pegged at Rs 107.69 crore’, he added.
He said a function will be held at the Ravindra Bhavan on September 5 to mark the two decades of existence of the society, which will be attended by Chief Minster, Manohar Parrikar, Leader of the Opposition, Pratapsing Rane, Cooperation Minister Deepak Dhavalikar and others.
