CANACONA: With rains battering north Karnataka since last four days, the Uttar Kannada district administration has put the taluka of Karwar and surrounding areas on red alert.
The administration has issued an advisory to people from neighbouring talukas of Karwar and Goa to postpone their plans, if any, of visiting Karwar.
The release of 59,000 cusec of water from Kadra dam has further compounded the situation for the residents living downstream of Kali River who have left their homes since Wednesday and shifted to the houses relatives away from the river.
Sources speaking about the scenario said that the Kali River is in full spate and residential houses at Halga and Hindu wada in the jurisdiction of Mallapur panchayat have been inundated since Wednesday.
Agricultural crops on the bank of River Kali are also destroyed due to incessant rains since the beginning of this week.
Realising that more rains will fall in the coming days, the authorities have released 36,000 cusec of water by opening all three of its crest doors on Thursday.
By keeping an eye on the inflow of water to the three other dams downstream on Kali River, authorities have started releasing water from these dams also.
However, with authorities releasing 59,000 cusec of water by opening three of its 10 doors beginning on Thursday has created a flood like situation down the river.
Uttar Kannada district administration has issued advisory to all the villages prone to flooding to shift to higher places while declaring holidays to most of the schools in affected areas sources said.
Advisory is also issued to people from neighbouring talukas of Karwar and Goa to postpone their plans if any of visiting Karwar, mainly the hilly regions it was stated.
