PONDA: Citizens from various parts of Ponda under banner Desh Premi Nagrik Sangatana took out a rally in Ponda in support of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Around two thousand people attended the rally that commenced from Rajiv Ghandhi Kala Mandir and culminated at Ponda bus stand with public meeting
Chief speaker Prof Datta Naik said that the issue first began in Assam some decades ago when a large number of infiltrators from Bangladesh were enrolled as voters in a constituency. There was demand from original Assamese for CAA at that time, but now the opposition is polarising people to create an impression that Assamese oppose it. “The fact is that CAA is a good Act; it is not against Muslims and Indians support the Act,” he said.
“There is effort by opposition to create an impression that the youth of the country are against CAA. There must be documents if one is citizen of the country,” he said.
“There is misinformation campaign that Muslims will be persecuted and driven out of the country. Government is not polarising but opposition parties are polarising people on religious ground. There must be an inquiry to find out who is spreading rumours. People should strongly support Prime Minister Narendra Modh and Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue of CAA,” Prof Naik said.
Convener of the rally Adv Raguveer Varde appealed to people to support CAA. “Some political parties oppose CAA for political gains. When Article 370 granting special status to Kashmir was revoked, there was no opposition. There was no opposition to Ram mandir verdict. So the opposition wants to instigate Muslims against CAA for political gains. Muslim need not fear this law. Muslims should stay away from these people spreading lies,” Adv Varde said.
