Yet again s Goa faced the ignominy of being recalled as a destination where foreigners face violence. References were made to cases where foreign nationals, many of them British, have either died in mysterious circumstances or were subjected to acts of violence like rape
The Independent of UK led with a headline “British woman raped in front of husband by a man who offered her a massage on Goa beach”

The report stated “British tourist was raped on holiday in India in front of her partner, local media has reported. Senior police investigating the incident say the woman was on the beach in Goa when she was attacked by a man on 2 June. The woman made a formal complaint on Monday after consulting with her family and the British embassy in India, it was said”
The paper reported that the accused is said to be part of a group that offers illegal massages near popular tourist spot Arambol beach, according to local media.
The highly respected The Independent went on to say A spokesperson from the UK foreign office said: “We are providing consular support to a British National in Goa. Nearly 300,000 Britons visited Goa in 2018 according to the latest numbers, with UK travellers being the second largest foreign group to holiday in the region.
Several other papers like The Daily Record, and The Mirror reported the story as did international websites like yahoo
Meanwhile, the accused Joel Vincent D’Souza was produced before the local court and is remanded for four days of police custody.
The incident occurred on June 2nd at 11 am however the official complaint was filed on June 6th. The victim British had come down to Goa last month on vacation.
The accused was earlier working as a librarian but is presently unemployed and use to provide mud baths/ massages part-time near the famous sweet Lake. On the day of the incident, the accused convinced the victim to have the service of a mud bath and on the pretext of giving a mud bath, allegedly raped her.
