SANGUEM: Maintenance operations of the tanks at the Selaulim Water Treatment Plant left residents of Sanguem town, Uguem and surrounding areas without potable water, as turbid water began flowing from their taps on Thursday and Friday.
Residents from these areas were in for a rude shock late Thursday evening, when muddy water began to flow from their taps. Alarm bells began ringing when residents across Sanguem town and Uguem village received the turbid water throughout Thursday night. Incidentally, residents in Uguem continued to receive muddy water even on Friday morning.
The supply of muddy water through the night caused immense hardship to residents, as there is no alternate source of potable water to most people in Sanguem and other neighbouring areas.
When contacted, sources at the Water Supply Department informed that muddy water had flowed through the taps because cleaning operations of the tanks were underway at the Selaulim Water Treatment Plant, from where potable water is supplied to most parts of South Goa.
Residents of Uguem were in for further difficulty when they continued to receive muddy water even when supply was restored on Saturday evening.
Water supply officials however informed that the problem would be rectified in a short while as the problem was due to a rupture in the pipeline at Khairikanttem.
Incidentally, this is not the first time that residents of Sanguem and Uguem have received muddy water. They experienced a similar problem three months ago.
Unhappy about the poor quality of water supply, residents of Uguem had even led a delegation to the Water Supply Department on at least two occasions in the last one year.
