CURCHOREM: Congress workers and supporters have decided to support the call given by Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral to stop the Vailankanni train at Curchorem station on Monday.
Irked with the South Western Railway (SWR) for failing to provide a halt to the Vailankanni train at the Curchorem-Sanvordem station, residents from Curchorem, Sanvordem and surrounding areas had decided to protest by stopping the train on May 27.
Addressing media at Curchorem on Saturday, Curchorem Congress Block President John D’Costa said, “We have been repeatedly a halt to the Vailankanni train at Curchorem-Sanvordem railway station. All important trains like Howrah Express, Vasco-Chennai Express, Goa-Delhi (Nizamudin) Express stop here after agitations. Why must we agitate every time? The SWR must provide a halt to all the trains as this is the nearest centrally-located station for people from Sanvordem, Quepem, Sanguem, Amblai, Panchwadi besides Curchorem,” said D’Costa.
He said all Congress workers and supporters will support the call given by the Curchorem MLA and urged all the people from Curchorem and surrounding areas, irrespective of party affiliations to assemble at Curchorem railway station on Monday at 9.15 am.
“We will participate and support the agitation not as BJP or Congress but as citizens,” said Puscal Sawant, President of Curchorem Block of Youth Congress.
Councillor of Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) Baburao Dessai also assured full support for the good cause.
Former CCMC chairperson Maria D’Costa, social worker Vincent D’Costa and others were present on the occasion.
Speaking to Herald, Quepem MLA Chandrakant Kavalekar also assured support to the good cause. “Curchorem Railway station is the nearest station for the people of my constituency, particularly from Quepem.
