PANJIM: Taking serious cognizance of increasing road accidents and related deaths in the State, the Transport Department has decided to implement measures suggested by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which are aimed at reducing traffic accidents and fatalities by 50 percent over the next five years.
The decision was taken after the Union Ministry wrote to the State government quoting the Geneva Convention which suggests reduction of road accidents and fatalities. The ministry decided to reduce road deaths by 50 per cent during the 2010 to 2020 period. The departments such as Public Works department, Health and Education would be roped in the bid to create awareness and reduce road fatalities.
Speaking to the media, Director of Transport Arun Desai said that the major thrust would be to procure equipment such as interceptor vehicles, alcometers and speed radar guns. “The enforcement of traffic rules and necessary amendments to the existing rules are being thought about, to control road mishaps,” he said.
The Transport Department has submitted a proposal to the State government to call for the State Road Safety Review Committee meeting headed by Chief Secretary.
