The River Navigation Department (RND) has begun trial runs of both roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ferries on the Zuari River, marking a major step forward in Goa’s push to modernize its transport infrastructure and alleviate road congestion. These advanced vessels are designed to carry passengers as well as vehicles—cars, trucks, and buses can drive directly on and off the ferries—streamlining loading and unloading processes and reducing wait times compared to traditional ferry services. The initial phase targets the busy Ribandar-Chorao corridor, which links the mainland with Chorao Island. This service aims to benefit daily commuters, tourists, and local businesses by providing a faster, more reliable, and eco-friendly alternative to congested road travel.
Currently, the RoRo ferries are in the final stages of technical trials and adjustments, including gearbox and thruster calibrations, to ensure they are fully operational. The official public launch, delayed due to technical issues, is now planned for mid-May 2025. Once operational, the service is expected to ease vehicular traffic on Goa’s roads, reduce fuel consumption, and advance the state’s goals for sustainable, integrated regional mobility. The RND has also indicated that, if successful, the RoRo ferry service could be extended to other major river routes, further improving connectivity and setting a new benchmark for water-based transport in the region.
