The alleged fuel contamination controversy at a petrol pump in Saligao has intensified after more customers came forward claiming their vehicles broke down shortly after refuelling. One customer alleged that mechanics found a significant quantity of water mixed with petrol while draining his motorcycle’s fuel tank, adding to concerns surrounding the incident.
Speaking to reporters, the petrol pump manager maintained that all standard safety checks were carried out before operations began. According to him, the outlet conducted routine sampling and water-level checks early in the morning, and no traces of water were detected before fuel sales started at around 7 am.
The manager said the first complaint was received around 9:30 am when a motorcyclist reported that his vehicle had stalled soon after refuelling. Similar complaints soon followed from several other customers, including owners of motorcycles and cars.
He claimed that after the complaints surfaced, the automated monitoring system began showing a gradual increase in the underground tank’s water level. The fuel storage tank remained sealed throughout, leaving the exact cause of the contamination unclear.
According to the manager, the petrol pump immediately advised affected customers to take their vehicles to mechanics. The outlet arranged for fuel to be drained, carburettors to be cleaned where necessary, fresh petrol to be supplied and repair costs to be settled.
He said the pump has documented all affected customers, including their vehicle details and contact numbers, and has maintained records of compensation paid for repairs and replacement fuel.
The manager added that around 25 vehicles were reportedly affected during the incident. Stressing that customer trust remains a priority, he said the outlet has always aimed to provide quality service and is fully cooperating with authorities as the investigation into the alleged contamination continues.
