VASCO: A large group of irate locals from Bondeabhat, Sancoale met the Mormugao Deputy Collector and demanded that immediate action be taken in connection to the contamination of the natural spring due to the release of sewage into it.
On Friday morning, the locals marched towards the Block Development Officer and called on the panchayat secretary to be present for the same. They were annoyed to find that the BDO was not present and then proceeded to meet Dy Collector Paresh Phaldessai. During their meeting with the Dy Collector, who gave them a patient hearing, they listed out their grievances.
They made allegations as to how the sewage was being released into the spring and spoke about how there has been a foul stench emanating from the spring along with the gathering of flies, which they fear can cause a health hazard.
The locals further pointed out that they have an inspection report from the Cortalim Health Centre and Goa State Pollution Control Board, which confirms that the water has been contaminated. Paulo Fernandes added that the inspection reports confirm the presence of coliform and how the water is dangerous for consumption. Another resident Paulina Azavedo highlighted the history of the spring and how some few houses are dependent on the same for water.
Responding to their pleas, Dy Collector assured to write to the Sancoale panchayat secretary and issue directions for action to be initiated.
