Sand dune destroyed in Sernabatim

MARGAO: Another sand dune in Sernabatim was excavated late night on Saturday. Sand of around two-meter highest has been cut from the dune and spread in the surrounding area.
Judith Almeida, a local and environmental activist, informed that someone was trying to make a road through the sand dune.
Incidentally, a road is proposed through the sand dune in the Regional Plan 2021. “The RP is giving these notorious elements a free hand to destroy the sand dunes and put peoples’ lives at risk,” she said.
This is the second incident in as many weeks. Earlier, Herald had reported another sand dune being cut at Sernabatim. The GCZMA is yet to inspect that site. Sand dunes are important for eco system as they prevent sand erosion along the coast.
