Seafarers plan nationwide protests

MARGAO: The Goa Convention of the All India Retired Seafarers Federation and the Forward Seafarers Union of India will start a pan-India demonstration and agitation at the onset of the parliament session.

MARGAO: The Goa Convention of the All India Retired Seafarers Federation and the Forward Seafarers Union of India will start a pan-India demonstration and agitation at the onset of the parliament session.
The movement will be held all over India to attract the attention of the government to the problems of the seafarers. 
Naresh Birwadkar, General Secretary, Forward Seamen Association of India and other office bearers, Dixon Vaz, president of Goa Seamen Association of India and several retired seamen attended the meet. 
The meeting decided that the All India Retired Seafarer Federation would launch a simultaneous mass agitation all over India when the winter session of the Parliament starts. 
There are over 20,000 registered retired seafarers all over India who will take to the streets to hold demonstrations all over the country. The demand will be for getting the rightful pension and will also object to the deduction of 300 dollars from the pension and will also demand the closure of all the trusts of the government. 
“Seafarers do not know where their deducted money is going. In addition to that, the seafarers have to get minimum Rs 5,000 pension and we will be demanding this during the dharnas,” said Forward Union General Secretary Naresh Birwadkar.
