PANJIM: The State Election Commission (SEC) is gearing up to hold elections to 11 municipal councils, the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP), a by-poll in Navelim ZP constituency and 22 wards of different village panchayats.
SEC sources said that the election schedule will be announced on February 22.
On the same day, the High Court of Bombay at Goa will hear ten writ petitions filled by different individuals challenging the delimitation and reservation of municipal wards. The delimitation and reservation has raised a major issue in the State.
The SEC had countermanded elections in Navelim ZP constituency following the death of Congress candidate Jose Santa Maria.
Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress president Pratima Coutinho made it clear that she will not contest the by-election in Navelim ZPO constituency. Coutinho said that Congress president Girish Chodankar had told her to file her nomination for by-election in Navelim ZP constituency.
“I am not contesting ZP elections as my advisors and well wishers have told me that I have worked hard for the Congress and should now contest Assembly elections,” she said.
