SANGUEM: The water at Selaulim Dam in Sanguem began to overflow since early Saturday morning, however, it was informed that there is no fear to the farming community in the surrounding areas.
Last year, the water began to overflow on August 14, while this year the overflow has commenced a little over a month earlier as compared to last year.
According to sources in Water Resources Department (WRD), the water had reached 41 metres when the overflow commenced on Saturday morning and crossed 42 metres on Sunday afternoon.
Sources further informed that the water has begun to overflow much earlier as compared to last year for the reason that the Selaulim canal which supplies irrigation water to farmers was breached in January 2013, causing stoppage of water supply for over 20 days.
“This left the water level in Selaulim reservoir high when the monsoon commenced, causing the dam spillway to fill much earlier than expected,” informed the source.
“The water overflow however will have no adverse effects on the farming community as the excess water flows into the nearby river,” added the source.
