MARGAO: Angry SGPDA market vendors on Monday warned of an indefinite bandh if the government dilly dallies on its promise to allot suitable place for worship in the market complex, even as the much-awaited joint meeting with the government is scheduled on Tuesday noon.
At the meeting of the vendors held in the market this morning, president of the Vendors Felix Gonsalves expressed unhappiness over the postponement of today’s meeting called by the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in Panjim. He said the vendors will meet again in the market on Tuesday evening if there’s no positive outcome from tomorrow’s meeting with the Chief Minister. “The vendors will not have any option than to call for a bandh if demand for a religious place for worship is not accepted by the government,” he told the vendors in the presence of Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco and city lawyer Adv Anacleto Viegas.
In his address, the Curtorim MLA said the Chief Minister has the habit of making U-turns on several issues in the past and hoped he has not done a re-think on his promise to allot space for the place of worship. He warned the government that the patience of the market vendors and general citizens was running out, adding that the vendors would not just close down the SGPDA market but the highway as well. “The Chief Minister himself has taught us how to close the highway in support of one’s demands. The government should understand that the vendors have a genuine demand which should be decided at the earliest”, he demanded.
Addressing the vendors, city-based lawyer Adv Anacleto Viegas said a delegation of the vendors will attend tomorrow’s meeting called by the Chief Minister, but warned that any further delay in addressing the just and genuine demands of the vendors will not be tolerated. “We will be meeting tomorrow evening to take stock of the situation and to chalk out the future course of action if no solution is forthcoming from the government side after Tuesday’s meeting”, he asserted.
