SANGUEM: South Goa Shiv Sena deputy chief Dattaprasad Sanguemkar has demanded an immediate inquiry and action against the contractor involved in the cleaning work of the main Selaulim canal at Cotarli, Sanguem, which is used for supplying water for agriculture to the entire district.
Sanguemkar said that the inquiry is needed following the use of heavy machinery by the contractor in the canal cleaning work.
He further said, “It is pertinent to note here that immediately after monsoons and before the release of water for agricultural operations, the main canal and its distributaries are cleaned of foliage and other material. The work also pertains to repair of the damaged portion by cementing the same.”
“Incidentally, the contractor is supposed to undertake the work of cleaning the canal and its repairs with the help of labourers along with light machinery. However, the contractor has used heavy machinery to excavate the mud which will damage the main canal, Sanguemkar claimed.
He has urged for an immediate inquiry into the matter and has called upon the concerned authorities to ascertain the damage caused to the canal’s side walls due to the “unwarranted” use of the heavy machinery.
