PANJIM: The Panjim Police arrested six persons for allegedly slaughtering a buffalo inside a pump house in a field near the Community Hall, Taleigao.

The accused have been identified as Nathan D’Souza (20), Bablu Sonar (25), Sudarshan Shah (18), Deepak Vishwakarma (52), Bhupesh Karala (42) and Kamal Singh. According to police sources, a call was received by the Panjim Police Station at around 3 am stating that some people were illegally slaughtering an animal.
A police team rushed to the spot and caught the people red-handed while slaughtering the animal. The team found footprints of the buffalo in the pump house. After conducting panchanama in the presence of two panchas, the carcass was sent to the Veterinary Hospital, Caranzalem, for post-mortem.
An FIR under Section 325 of BNS (killing animal without any reason) and 11 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960, has been registered at the Panjim Police Station and the case is being investigated by PSI Suraj Madgaonkar.
Recently, fed up with their crops being damaged by the animals and the police inaction despite complaints, the farmers had brought a buffalo to the police station. The farmers claimed that the bovine was guilty of munching away their livelihoods.
The impromptu “arrest” was led by socio political activist Cecille Rodrigues, Nathan D’Souza and veteran cultivator Francis Coelho.
Farmers claimed the stray cattle mostly come from Santa Cruz and also blamed the village panchayat for not constructing a cattle pound on the land given by the Comunidade on the Taleigao Plateau.
