Beware!, all those who zoom on their bikes or four-wheelers a la filmy style. You will never know when you will be caught red-handed for over-speeding.
With rising road accidents in the State the traffic cell of the Goa Police has decided to induct speed radar guns to keep an eye on motorists who love over-speeding.
A radar gun or speed gun is a small unit that help to detect the speed of a vehicle for speed limit enforcement.
There are hand held, stationary and moving speed radar instruments. They are very sophisticated, able to track vehicles approaching and receding both in front of and behind the patrol vehicle. They can also track the fastest vehicle in the selected radar beam, front or rear.
Currently, the traffic cell has two interceptors but it wants to equip itself with speed radar guns as the rate of accidents happening due to over-speeding and drunken driving is on the rise, said the official from the traffic cell.
It has planned to purchase about 25 speed radar guns worth Rs 2 lakh each. The government has given a green signal for this proposal, said the officer.
A supplier from Delhi is being considered for the supply of the equipments, he added.
Campaign against drunken driving :The traffic police has intensified its campaign against drunken driving and regular checkups are being conducted between 7 pm and 11 pm as most accidents happen either because of over-speeding or because people drive/ ride in inebriated conditions, said the officer.
As per the statistics available from the department, for April end 2010, a total 1656 accidents were reported, of this, of this 96 were fatal accidents with 104 deaths.
Statistics for the corresponding period in 2009 reveal that 111 people died in road accidents. This year’s death rate is slightly less as compared to figures of the last year. The overall rate of accident of small State is comparatively high, nevertheless.
Traffic cells: Three new traffic cells as announced by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat some time back have become operational . New traffic cells had been announced for Ponda, Calangute and Curchorem.
