Churchill assures to solve Bardez water woes soon

PWD Minister Churchill Alemao has stated that the government is fully aware that residents of Bardez taluka are facing acute shortage of water.
He was addressing the gathering at Verem on Sunday after laying the foundation stone for the improvement of water supply scheme to Verem.
“It is this reason I have decided to commission the newly built water treatment plant of 50 MLD at Assnora by May-end or first week of June and release 20 MLD water for Bardez taluka. With the additional supply, the water problem of Bardez taluka will be solved,” said Alemao.
He further said the existing 250 cubic metre service reservoir at Verem, which is located near INS Mandovi, was constructed in 1984.
“Due to vertical and horizontal expansions in residential areas and large-scale increase in tourism and hospitality related demands, the existing service storage has fallen far short of actual demand,” he said.
“People of Verem and nearby areas are facing acute shortage of water. Therefore, the PWD has decided to construct a sump of 1,000 cubic metres and service reservoir of 800 cubic metres capacity spending about Rs 2.32 crore so that the distribution system will have improved pressure at consumer end,” added Alemao.
“I was instrumental in getting the Tilari irrigation project passed when I was the irrigation minister. Now there is no shortage of raw mater and what was required was an additional treatment plant at Assnora. Hence immediately after assuming charge of PWD, I laid emphasis on the construction of additional treatment plant of 50 MLD at Assnora,”” claimed Alemao.
“This project is nearing completion and once this plant is fully commissioned, the water shortage problem of North Goa will be alleviated,” said Alemao.
Calangute MLA Agnel Fernandes said though Verem falls in Saligao Constituency, he considered it as an obligation to fulfill the commitment given by him to the electorate during the last election regarding improvement in water supply.
“I was fully aware that the residents were facing acute shortage of water. It is for this reason I took up the matter with the PWD minister consistently and got the project sanctioned. Upon completion of the project, about 13,000 people from Verem and Nerul will be benefited,” said Fernandes.
Reis-Magos Sarpanch Sushmita Pednekar, Panch Sunil Shirodkar, former sarpanch Bhupal Chodankar and Sewage Corporation Chairman Shirodkar also spoke on the occasion. Ajay Pednekar compered the function.
