ICAR discovers new variety of Mancurad mango

The Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), Old Goa has discovered a new variety of Mancurad mango at Siolim village in Bardez taluka .
Having average weight content of 480 grams it is considered to be of superior quality. Also, it has less fibre, said a scientist at ICAR.
What decides mango’s quality is its pulp ratio. Normally, a mango has pulp ratio of 60-70 per but the new variety found
contains pulp ratio of more than 70 per cent.
Currently, ICAR has collection of about fifteen types of Mancurad varieties and efforts are on to discover new types that have remained in the dark and may extinct if not preserved.
The ICAR has collection of about 122 local varieties of mango in addition to hybrid and other varieties that are brought from other State and experimented here.
Some of the varieties that are tried in Goa include a high yielding Sonpari, Royal special, Totapuri and Benesan.
The hybrid varieties introduced by Indian Institute of Horticulture Research (IHAR) Safeda is being also tried in Goa, said the scientist.
Other hybrid varieties introduced include Ratnagiri Afonso, Amrapali, Kesar from Gujarat and Mudhilika from North East. However, when it comes to mangoes, Goa’s first choice is Mancurad.
