Hundreds bid tearful adieu to Dr Susrut

Hundreds of people from all walks of life bid a tearful farewell to Dr Susrut Agnelo Martins, who was laid to rest at Salvador do Mundo cemetery on Sunday evening.
Noted social worker, student’s leader and practitioner of Alternative Medicine, Dr Martins (48) breathed his last at Campal Clinic on Friday. He was admitted to the hospital following a neck and chest pain but he died due to massive heart attack. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Dr Martins’ body was kept at his residence at Paitona to enable the people to pay homage to him. Hundreds of friends, relatives, dignitaries and people from different walks of life offered condolences to the bereaved family.
Dr Martins funeral was attended by host of prominent personalities that included politicians, film personalities, educationists, writers and large number of well wishers.
Aldona MLA Dayanand Narvekar visited the residence and offered wreath and condolences to his family. Among the dignitaries who paid their last respect included Goa Konkani Academy President N Shivdas, Konkani Basha Mandal President Prashant Naik, former president of Goa Konkani Academy Pundalik Naik, former GKA vice president Dr Tanaji Halarnkar, Konkani writers Nagesh Karmali, Dilip Borkar, Damodar Ghanekar, Tukaram Shet, Nationalist Youth Congress President Rajan Ghate, film producer Rajendra Talak, Nandakumar Kamat and Adv Froliano Lobo.
Speaking to Herald, Aldona MLA Narvekar said Dr Martins was a good human being and social worker. “He was characterized as humble and honourable person of high stature. With his death, I have lost a good friend,” said Narvkar.
Goa Konkani Academy President N Shivdas said Dr Martins played a vital role in the getting Konkani the status of official language.
“He was a social activist and worked for the betterment of the society. He formed Goan Youth Mahasangh to protect the interest of Goan youth. His death has created a big vacuum in the Konkani movement,” said Shivdas.
HND ADDS: Meanwhile, COrtalim MLA and Deputy Speaker Mauvin Godinho has condoled the death of Dr Susrut Martins.
Godinho said that Dr Susrut was a student leader and actively fought for 50 per cent bus concession to students. He also fought for Konkani language, Godinho recalled.
