Panjim: The entire Tiswadi taluka, including parts of Panjim, witnessed major power failure for nearly six hours on Thursday, leaving citizens in the lurch. The sub-station at Tivim had a total breakdown after there was a technical glitch in one of the circuits this morning.
Power went off around 11 am, after the sole circuit of the Tivim sub-station was snag-hit. The sub-station tower from Tivim to Kadamba plateau, with power capacity of 110KV, provides electricity to entire Tiswadi taluka.
Assistant Engineer (Panjim) Arun Patil said the sub-station which was working on only one circuit since the last week gave way this morning. He said the other circuit was already non-functional.
“As a result, the entire Tiswadi taluka, including Panjim, witnessed power failure,” Patil said.
The Electricity department managed to seek direct load from sub-stations in Porvorim and Ponda, however, this could not fulfill the required demand. “Only 20 per cent power was made available to Panjim. Most of the taluka had to sweat it out as the day’s maximum temperature was around ****. The power cut went on for at least six hours,” he said.
The State government had recently signed a document with the Union Ministry for Power on 24×7 Power Supply to All by 2019. At present, the State’s power requirement is around 450MW, which is expected to go up to 934MW by 2018-19.
