PANJIM: The Goa Pradesh Samajwadi Party on Monday demanded immediate resumption of legal mining in Goa, claiming that livelihood of thousands of people is at stake.
The party has also demanded that the grants given to 130 primary schools, which were imparting primary education in Konkani before June 10, 2011, but shifted to English-medium at primary level, in anticipation of change in former Congress government’s policy, should be stopped immediately.

Speaking to media persons, the party state president Rohidas Shirodkar said that government has failed to live up to the people’s expectations after nine months of coming to power. “The first decision of the government to continue grants to English medium primary schools was unacceptable. Later it also stopped mining and till date failed to make a strong case before Supreme Court for resumption of legal mining,” Shirodkar said.
Pointing to the government failure to fulfill its assurance to solve Mayem evacuee property issue by December 19, 2012, Rohidas said “rather than just giving assurances, work needs to be done to fulfill them.” Shirodkar assured that Samajwadi party would stand by the demands of Mayem residents.
