PORVORIM: Acceding to the demands of fish vendors, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has agreed to provide space in the old fish market shed to install small religious structures for the Catholic and Hindu communities.
The fish vendors had observed a bandh and had marched to MMC last week demanding some space for religious structures in the fish market area. The committee headed by MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari, Adv Subhash Narvekar and Sudhir Kandolkar discussed the issue with representatives of fish vendors and has agreed to provide them the necessary space in the old fish market shed.
Speaking to media, Falari stated that once the fish vendors are moved to the new fish market complex on January 26, the old fish market shed will become vacant.
“MMC will construct two small structures in the vacant space to enable the Catholic and Hindu community to keep their deities. The remaining space will be utilized for parking of vehicles. Fish vendors will be allowed to erect ‘mandaps’ in the shed only during the festival time and the fish vendors have agreed to this,” informed Falari.
