MERCES: With the culvert construction at Indira Nagar-Chimbel courting controversy over flow of sewage and garbage into fields, St Cruz MLA Babush Monserratte directed Water Resources Department officials to prepare a plan to construct a canal from the culvert to a nearby rivulet so that the fields are not affected.
The directions came after the MLA along with WRD and PWD officials inspected the site on Monday and decided that the best solution was to construct a canal connecting the culvert to the nearby rivulet.
Speaking to Herald, Monserratte informed that a six-metre canal would be built, parallel to the water pipeline, which will put an end to the hardship faced by the farmers.
“Once the canal is built, the Agriculture Department will be approached to chalk out a plan to revive the fields so that the farmers could return to farming,” he added and stated that it is a lengthy process, which will require cooperation of the farmers.
Later, Monserratte toured the Indira Nagar area with several residents complaining of choked drainages in the locality. He then directed the PWD officials to widen drainages wherever needed.
He questioned PWD officials over the delay in undertaking the developmental works at Indira Nagar, which were supposed to be complete before the onset of the monsoon.
When apprised that the contractor who was awarded the tender abandoned the works midway, Monserratte directed the PWD officials to re-float the tender so that the works can be undertaken immediately after the monsoon.
Former St Cruz MLA Victor Gonsalves, Santa Cruz Sarpanch Tony Fernandes, WRD A E Nazareth Vaz, PWD A E David Braganza, J E Peter Corte and others accompanied the MLA.
