PANJIM: The Cabinet on Friday approved implementation of the SLNP Scheme under which all street lights will be replaced with LED lights.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said this would improve the quality of lighting on the roads and would also save Rs 18 crore annually. “This will be done without any upfront cost to the government,” he said.
Giving details of the scheme, he said the work has been entrusted to EESL, a Union government undertaking, for replacement of lights with LEDs. “The total cost of the project is Rs 92 crore, out of which EESL will invest 80 percent while we will chip in with a share of 20 per cent,” he said.
The State will make a monthly payment to the EESL out of the savings it makes annually, Parsekar said.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet has approved the appointment of 60 junior engineers on contract basis. Parsekar said the junior engineers would be paid a monthly salary of Rs 17,000.
