Sunset for Surya? World Cup-Winning Captain Suryakumar Yadav Axed as India T20 Skipper

Just three months after leading India to the T20 World Cup title on home soil, Suryakumar Yadav’s tenure as India’s T20 captain appears to have come to an abrupt end. According to a reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in consultation with the team management and selection committee, has decided to appoint a new captain for the upcoming T20 cycle.

The decision comes ahead of India’s white-ball tour of Ireland and England later this month. India are scheduled to play two T20 Internationals in Ireland followed by a five-match T20I series in England.

According to the report, the decision was taken after discussions involving the selection committee, team management and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

“The selection committee, BCCI and team management, in consultation with coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should go with a new skipper from here on. Under Surya’s captaincy, the team did win the T20 World Cup but keeping his form and future in mind, they felt it’s time to move on,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

The report further stated that Suryakumar is unlikely to be considered for selection in the near future and that the decision will be communicated to him shortly.

The development comes amid a prolonged dip in form for the Mumbai batter. Despite captaining India to their third T20 World Cup title earlier this year, Suryakumar’s batting performances have come under scrutiny over the last two seasons.

His struggles were evident during the IPL 2026 season, where he managed just 270 runs from 13 innings. Although he ended the campaign with a half-century against Rajasthan Royals, he finished with an average of only 20.76.

Suryakumar was appointed India’s T20 captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the format following India’s World Cup triumph in the West Indies in 2024. Known for his innovative strokeplay and aggressive approach, he enjoyed significant success as a leader, culminating in India’s T20 World Cup victory in March 2026.

However, with the team management now looking towards a new cycle and the next T20 World Cup, selectors appear keen to invest in a new captain and build a squad for the future.
