MARGAO: A tense situation occurred in the SGPDA wholesale fish market at Margao on Saturday morning over procuring of beef. The Beef Shop owners claimed that there was an argument which arose after Bajrang Dal activists stopped them. They alleged that the Bajrang Dal youth were stopping their vehicles and demanding money.

The argument resulted in fights including with weapons consisting of iron rods. One shop owners and two helpers of the meat shop and two person who claimed they were Gaurakshaks were injured and admitted to the South Goa District Hospital.
The names of the injured include Alfaz, Younus and Masjid from shop owners and Kiran Acharya and Sai Malwankar from the Gaurakshaks. The beef sellers alleged that Gaurakshakss assaulted their workers with rods and were demanding money.
Gaurakshs claimed the beef carrying vehicles had come from Karnataka, while the beef shop owners say that they are perennially harassed to prevent them from selling beef in the market. They say they procure their beef from the Goa meat complex, Usgao.
The beef sellers downed their shutters in protest on Saturday. The situation may remain the same ahead of the Christian festival of Christmas.
