In a recent incident at the Sonsoddo garbage dumping site, tension escalated as several two-wheeler riders skidded on Tuesday night due to wet waste flowing onto the road from parked trucks at the site. The situation prompted an inspection on Wednesday by officials from the Goa Industrial Development Corporation and the Margao Municipality. The inspection aimed to assess the conditions and operations at the Sonsoddo garbage site, where concerns over safety and environmental issues have been raised.
On Wednesday an inspection was held at the Sonsoddo Garbage plant where the Curtorim MLA warned the Margao Municipality Chief Officer, urging immediate action and hinting at blocking garbage trucks if the issue persists.

Camilo Barreto, an MMC councillor, expressed dissatisfaction, holding the Mormugao Municipality unaccountable for the situation. He highlighted the unsuitability of parking trucks in the area due to its sloped nature. Barreto criticized the Margao Municipality’s alleged negligence and called for the resignation of the Municipality Chairperson, citing the lack of attention to critical issues such as poor lighting on the road and leakage from parked trucks causing visibility hazards for riders.
Residents living in proximity to the Sonsoddo Garbage Dump have borne the brunt of its effects for years. Abdul Shaikh, a local resident, lamented about enduring the persistent issues caused by the dump for the past 18 years. He recalled promises made to resolve the garbage problem when the site was initially established, yet the foul smell has plagued the area consistently. Shaikh cited past incidents of fires and gas emissions, revealing that during a previous dump fire, residents were compelled to evacuate. Despite repeated promises from ministers, the fundamental issue remains unresolved, Shaikh emphasized.
