PANJIM: Mahanand has been convicted in three rape-cum-murder cases and is serving his sentence while his appeals are in the High Court of Bombay at Goa. In another seven cases in which he has been charged, trial is on in different courts.
The cases range from rape and murder to robbery against him that unfolded one by one after he was called for questioning in the rape charge by this lone surviving victim in April 2009.
A former rickshaw driver from Ponda and father of a (now) five-year-old daughter, he emerged as one of Goa’s most notorious sexual predators termed the “dupatta killer” after he confessed to his crime.
From 1994 to 2009 he conned gullible women in his “love trap”, made false promises of marrying them after establishing an intimate relationship with them, and later strangulated his victims using their own dupatta.
