CALANGUTE: Ongoing work to widen the road in front of Vidyaniketan High School and along Boa Viagem in Calangute has had unexpected consequences, with domestic tourists littering the area.
Tourists have been found parking their vehicles by the extended portion of the road and use the space to cook and consume meals, before discarding waste at the site.
The tourists also park their vehicles at night along the widened portion, posing a threat to locals considering rise in chain-snatching incidents and thefts.
When contacted, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said: “At present, the widened portion may be used by tourists but it will not happen in the near future. Once approvals and permissions are done, a retaining wall will be constructed. The widened roads are needed so it has been done in hurry but the approvals are being sought for widened portion of low-lying areas and the construction of road including a footpath will be taken up later,” informed Lobo. “We will make a provision to park vehicles in the area marked near the Church at Calangute,” he added.
When asked why farmers were not compensated for filling of their paddy fields, Lobo assured that everyone, including tenants and land-owners, will be suitably compensated after all the government approvals.“All owners who were affected due to the road widening in Calangute will be compensated at a later stage,” he said.
