Three held for desecration of Shivaji Maharaj statue

MAPUSA: Three persons have been arrested in connection with desecration of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue and the trio have been remanded to six days police custody by the court.

The three accused have been identified as Nigel Joaquim Fonceca, Alex alias Felix Fernandes and Lawrence Mendes, all are residents of Mapusa. They have been booked under Sections 295-A, 153-A, 427 r/w 34 of IPC.

During the course of investigation, the investigation team maintained a surveillance in and around locality and collected CCTV footage from different locations. This identified the culprit and staff first zero down Nigel Fonseca and apprehended him. Further during interrogation, he revealed involvement of two more male persons. Acting on the information, the police team detained the other two.

It may be recalled that tension prevailed at Acoi-Mapusa after unknown miscreants vandalised the statue at Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on Monday.  As the news spread life wildfire, locals and Shiv premis gathered in large numbers and condemned the incident.
