MARGAO: During the celebration of the feast of St Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, Fr Gabriel Coutinho, parish priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church in Navelim, called on the tiatr community to be torchbearers, opening the minds and hearts of the people. He addressed the challenges faced by tiatr artists, many of whom are grappling with financial struggles, and urged them to work together to prevent vulgarity on stage.

The function, organised by Goans Non-Stop Tiatrist and Tiatristanchi Sonstha, saw a large gathering of tiatr artists who attended the Eucharistic celebration. Fr Coutinho reminded the artists that performing and writing tiatr is a divine gift and emphasised their role in preserving the true spirit of tiatr.
“Tiatrists must remember that performing and writing a tiatr is a gift from God. As such, they are the torchbearers of culture, entrusted with the task of opening minds and hearts. Nothing is impossible if one stays focused and prays to God,” Fr Coutinho said.He also encouraged artists to seek divine guidance before composing scripts or songs.
Following the Eucharistic service, a get-together was held where Anthony Barbosa, President of the Tiatr Academy of Goa, highlighted the importance of unity among the tiatr artists. “To take tiatr to greater heights, unity is essential. Additionally, we must focus on encouraging and promoting young talent, as they are the future of tiatr,” Barbosa stated.
Barbosa assured the gathering of the Tiatr Academy’s full support in addressing issues and promoting the art form at all levels.
Arnald D’Costa, President of Goan Konkani Non-Stop Tiatrist and Tiatristanchi Sonstha, and other dignitaries also addressed the gathering, reaffirming the need for unity within the tiatr community.
The event was attended by notable tiatrists, including Normandz Fernandes (Vice-President), Pascoal de Chicalim (Secretary), and Anthony Sen (Treasurer), who all expressed their commitment to advancing the cause of tiatr.
