PANJIM: Trade unions under the banner of Goa Convention of Workers on Wednesday held a demonstration in the State protesting against the anti-people/labour policies of the Central and State governments demanding a minimum labour wage of Rs 12,000 per month for labour in Goa.
Over hundreds of workers associated with trade unions like AITUC, INTUC, CITU, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, held a protest rally, as a part of pan-India strike called by trade unions in the country.
The demonstration that started from KTC bus stand, proceeded to the city shouting slogans against the govts, culminated in a public meeting, opposite Customs House.
Various other demands including roll back of prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene and LPG cylinders, abolition of contract system of labour and regularization of services, etc were raised. Apart from protecting jobs, issues of livelihood of mining dependent people were raised during the protests.
The union leaders claimed that the governments at the Centre as well as at the State level have totally failed to create a social and physical infrastructure such as quality education, health care for the working class.
