PONDA: Forest officials on Thursday rescued a female leopard from a trap that was reportedly laid to catch a wild boar at Kavdi fator-Dongor in Vasantar-Shiroda.
According to reports, a local farmer noticed the leopard trapped and alerted the Ponda forest officials.
Range Forest Officer (RFO), Laurenco Dias, along with his team rushed to site and then summoned the rescue team from the Bondla wild life sanctuary.
According to forest officials, the female leopard sustained minor injuries after getting caught in the trap.
Officials added that the wired trap is mostly used to catch wild animals, especially wild boars.
Officials from the Bondla rescue team, RFO Vishwas Chodankar and RFO Paresh Parab, along with other forest personnel conducted the rescue operation.
The leopard was immobilised with a tranquilizer before officials released the animal from the trap.
North Goa Deputy Conservator of Forests G T Kumar was also present at the site. “Such traps are illegal and people should refrain from doing this. Traps are affecting the wild life in the region,” he said. The leopard was shifted to the Bondla wild life sanctuary and will be kept under observation.
This is the fourth instance of a leopard getting trapped in Shiroda constituency in the last three years.
