SANGUEM: While felling of trees or even affixing a nail to a tree is considered an offence, a large number of logs have been used by the Collem Range of the Forest Department to fence off the afforested area at Dudhal ward in Kalay village.
What is also surprising is that even trees located along the fence are nailed with barbed wire to form a part of the fence.
“The fencing is done to protect the forest area from being encroached upon by locals as the area is in the midst of the Dudhal village,” explained a source.
Residents have failed to understand the forest department’s logic to use logs to fence the area, instead of concrete poles or some other alternative material.
“These logs will not last long and will get damaged within a few years. This will lead to a waste of public money,” remarked a bemused local.
