Former US President Donald Trump has reportedly urged European Union officials to impose tariffs of up to 100% on India and China as part of a strategy to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Reuters. Both India and China are major purchasers of Russian oil. Currently, the US has imposed 50% tariffs on India, including a 25% penalty tariff linked to its Russian oil purchases.
In a related development, Trump indicated he is looking forward to speaking with his “very good friend” Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming weeks, raising hopes of a possible visit to the US or a direct call. Earlier, a visit was being planned around the UN General Assembly, where Trump could have addressed the session on September 26, but the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has now been designated to speak on September 27.
