PANJIM: Besides the two garbage plants being set up in North and South Goa at Saligao and Curchorem, the government is helping municipalities set up another two garbage treatment plants in Bicholim and Ponda that will both convert garbage into energy.
According to Urban Development Minister Francis Souza the plant in Bicholim is being constructed with technology that will turn plastic back into hydrocarbons which will later be used to produce electricity. The second plant that is proposed at Ponda will use a special plasma technology that will deal with wet waste and produce energy from it.
“We have to look for plants that can deal with up to 500 tons of garbage a day. The two plants in the North and South can deal with 100 tons each,” D’Souza said adding that the plants in Bicholim and Ponda will be smaller, but could produce as much as 3 MW electricity per ten ton of garbage.
Currently the state government is spending around Rs 22,000 per truck of dry plastic waste that they send to Bijapur to be burnt in the cement factories.
On the Saligao garbage front, the deputy chief minister said that the government has taken charge of the land, and the plant will be set up by Department of Science and Technology over the next few months.
