Sources say, so far, the salvage operation team has managed to cut the grounded pontoon into only two portions. However, both the portions are yet to be pulled on to the shore.
Sources informed Herald that, even though the staff involved in salvage operations has to face severe hardships after the State witnessed insistent rains and rough weather since Wednesday, still they successfully managed to cut the pontoon into two parts so that the pulling work of pontoon becomes easy.
Sources also say that out of the total length of 45 meters, Arihant staff have cut the vessel by 20 meters long and 18 meters wide, however while pulling the 20 meters long wreckage, the winch shaft bearing developed some fault and thus the work had to be stopped midway.
“We have asked for spare parts from Mumbai and the moment they are received, we would again start the pulling work and both the wreckage portion of pontoon would be removed soon,” informed an Arihant staff.
Meanwhile, with each passing day, anger among the Cansaulim locals has been brewing high. While raising serious concerns, the Cansaulim Villagers Action Committee has demanded the government to put pressure on Arihant Ship Breakers to increase their manpower and machinery to ensure that the salvage operations concluded soon, failing which, the group said, it would be compelled to come out on streets.
