Later, in a memorandum submitted to various authorities, Navelim Civic & Consumer Forum, highlighted the danger posed to motorists, pedestrians and school children due to the lack of control by the government authorities over the work carried out by contractors.
“The vehicle sped off after the accident and the occupants didn’t even bother to help the victims. On the contrary the victims inform that the driver shouted at them, even though they were under shock, before speeding off, when people started gathering at the site,” reads the memorandum.
“Today, at 10 am two young ladies escaped death by a whisker, in front of St Anthony Cross, on the Navelim Church and Rawafond road, when they were hit by a speeding outstation vehicle. The ladies were on a scooter, when this big car moved towards the right side to avoid a depression created in the road due to recently laid water pipe line. On the other side is the shabbily filled Reliance cable trench,” Forum secretary Joseph Vaz said.
“This particular road is undergoing repairs for more than three years; and at least three pipes lines have been laid in quick succession to supply water to Navelim. The there are deep wells for sewage which are still not completed and there is also a trench dug up by Reliance Communication, ” Vaz said.
Heavy traffic is banned on this road, but a lot of trucks, including interstate and mining trucks, move at high speeds on this road especially at night time, he said.
“The police catch only motorcycle riders for helmets and triple seat; cars and bikes also go speeding on this road; we demand speed limit with prominent boards and police surveillance to curb incidences like these and worse,” Vaz said.
