Several instances of tree collapse were reported in and around Ponda, in which roads were blocked, houses, electric lines and poles were damaged.
Several places in Ponda were without power for long hours due to snapping of electric lines; rain water entered some houses due to chocked drains and even the old Ponda bus stand was flooded Monday night.
The traffic along the Ponda-Belgaum National Highway was paralysed after a huge tree crashed across the road, at Khandepar. The fire and emergency personnel who rushed to clear the tree were reportedly found themselves helpless without modern tools to cut and remove the three; and a local panch Sandeep Khandeparkar reportedly assisted the fire personnel by providing them with a modern tree cutter.
The most affected places were Kundai, Bandora, Kavlem and Wadi Talavlim where people had to spend the night in dark. At least four electric poles crashed to the ground after trees collapsed on them at Ambegal in Bandora. The electricity department, with the help of the fire personnel, cleared the trees and restored the power supply by morning.
A retaining wall behind Narayan Apartment building at Sadar Ponda collapsed on a shed due to the heavy rains. Two scooters and a car that were parked under the shed were damaged in the incident.
PWD Minister Sudin Davlikar and MLA Lavoo Mamlatdar inspected some of the affected places to take stock of situation, on Tuesday morning.
