Fruit vendors in Vasco have hit out at Nazir Khan over his recent remarks, stating that people cannot be expected to purchase fruits from a fish market, as many fruits are used for religious and ceremonial purposes.
The vendors said that mixing fruit stalls with non-vegetarian markets such as fish sections is inappropriate and unacceptable for both buyers and sellers. They clarified that they are not opposed to shifting their location, but only if they are accommodated alongside vegetable vendors and in an area away from fish and meat markets.
They further maintained that any decision regarding relocation should be taken by the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) and the local MLA, and not by “some random person.”
The vendors have urged authorities to hold consultations with stakeholders before taking any steps and to ensure that their livelihoods are protected while maintaining proper market planning and hygiene standards.
