VASCO: Following directions from Senior police officers to file an FIR in the Ravindra Velip assault case reported at Sada Sub Jail in the month of March this year, the Mormugao Police on Thursday have booked a case against unknown accused jail inmates for assaulting Velip inside the jail premises.
Police Sub Inspector Rishikesh Patil informed that “On March 23, one Ravindra Velip, resident of Cavrem, had complained that, on March 23, 2016 at about 10.30 hrs, at near cell No. 10, Sub-Jail, Sada, unknown inmates of Subjail, Sada, caught the complainant from behind, blindfolded and gagged him with cloth and further assaulted him with fist blows, boots, lifted him and threw him down from a height due to which he sustained fractures to his left hand.
“The case was initially investigated by us, then by SDM Mormugao, then by IAS Swapnil Naik after government ordered magisterial inquiry. Now as we have received directions from superiors, we have registered the case under Section 325 and section 34IPC and further investigation is in progress,” Patil added.
It might be recalled that on March 22, Ravindra Velip, 27, Cavrem-Pirla gram panchayat member, was arrested, along with other villagers, for protesting and stopping trucks transporting iron ore through his village.
