Vendors for action against rent-a-bike owners occupying parking space at Margao

SP Traffic Angle said that rent-a-bike is not permitted to park their bikes in the space meant for public parking.

MARGAO: Rent-a-bikes occupying the public parking space continue to haunt Margao town. And hence, vendors of Margao, besides the general public, demanded strict action against the owners of those rent-a-bikes at the earliest.

Locals have been complaining about the parking space being utilised by many bike and car owners for a very long period of time. Several vehicles are noticed parked for many days, depriving others to utilise the space.

Vinod Shirodkar, president of New Market Vendors Association told reporters that this problem has been continuing for the last several months and the civic body and other concerned authorities failed to initiate actions.

“These bikes are parked for a long time around the Margao municipal building, resulting in depriving the general public of parking. This has further resulted in bad impact on the businesses, as the public avoid coming to the town due to no parking space,” he claimed.

He demanded that the traffic police or the RTO initiate actions against owners of the rent-a-bike.

It may be recalled that year before the same issue had been raised in the council meeting by some of the councillors, upon which then chief officer Agnelo Fernandes had ordered an internal inquiry, but no concrete action was seen. It was noticed that those owners of the rent-a-bike are illegally using the parking space around the municipal building.

Councillor Mahesh Amonkar told reporters that he had already discussed this issue with the Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dharmesh Angle, besides officers of RTO at Margao office.

“Traffic Police have informed us that those owners of the rent-a-bike are not allowed to park their bikes around the municipal building. Angle has also assured to initiate action against the violators,” he informed.

SP Traffic Angle said that rent-a-bike is not permitted to park their bikes in the space meant for public parking.

“This will be a last warning to those rent-a-bike owners or strict action will be initiated. At the same time my appeal to the Margao Municipal Council to provide us a space to keep such bikes, on which action is initiated,” he urged.
